The Burning Men by Will Shindler

A stunning tension and suspense filled debut novel

Format: Hardback

Publisher: Hodder& Stoughton

Opening five years in the past where the fire brigade are sent to deal with a huge blaze at One Pacific Square, a crew are sent in to rescue a civilian who has been spotted at a window.

Fast forward to the present day where we are introduced DI Alex Flynn whose wife has just passed away from cancer. With only his grief for company he begs to return to work when he learns of a bizarre murder which has just taken place at a wedding, where the groom has been burnt to death.

Despite his objections he is forced to team up with Mattie Paulson who has transferred from another force. It is not long before there is another gruesome murder along the same lines, the hunt is on to track down the killer.

At this stage to give away any more plot detail would be to spoil and deny the reader what is a thoroughly engrossing and original Police procedural.

The central characters are wonderfully portrayed, somewhat flawed but both with strong opinions it would be fair to say that they don’t necessarily see eye to eye but this just seems to add to the chemistry between them. Flynn still grieving and Paulson who has a past she is not prepared to share, however what they do have is a desire to seek the truth and be part of a larger team.

The story and plot lines are cleverly constructed full of intrigue, the reader is drip fed clues along the way as to what really happened five years ago, however, there are plenty of twists and turns along the way. What the author has cleverly done is to introduce two apparently connected and yet seemingly separate strands to the story which only heightens the drama and suspense and leaves the reader in two minds as to who is who

This is another of those classic page turners whereby once started it is difficult to put down as you race to the end to uncover who is the killer, at the end the author manages to tie everything together with just a little hint that we may not have finished with all the characters.

It is always good to have a new voice in the crime writing field and when the writing is as good as this its even better.

Be prepared to be totally immersed and absorbed. This is an extremely tense pacy read and one that comes highly recommend

I am certainly looking forward to reading more about the pair
